The relevance and value of prophetic ministry in the church today

So long as there are people to mature in Christ, a changing world to live in, and a growing church influence in the earth, all ministry gifts will be needed. This includes prophetic ministry. With prophetic ministry in proper use, the church is greatly strengthened, stabilized and promoted.

Consider these things:

1. Prophetic ministry will help the church be able to meet all challenges with the perspectives, revelations and wisdom that is needed to be victorious and progressive. Isaiah 33:5-6 declares God has filled Zion (the church) with justice and righteousness. Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of our times. Prophetic ministry helps provide these necessary resources to the church.

Examples:

Acts 11:27-30 (NKJV)
27 And in these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch.
28 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar.
29 Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea.
30 This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Acts 13:1-3 (NKJV)
1 Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
3 Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.

Acts 15:30-33 (NKJV)
30 So when they were sent off, they came to Antioch; and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter.
31 When they had read it, they rejoiced over its encouragement.
32 Now Judas and Silas, themselves being prophets also, exhorted and strengthened the brethren with many words.
33 And after they had stayed there for a time, they were sent back with greetings from the brethren to the apostles.

Acts 21:10-14 (NKJV)
10 And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.
11 When he had come to us, he took Paul's belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, 'So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.' "
12 Now when we heard these things, both we and those from that place pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem.
13 Then Paul answered, "What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."
14 So when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, "The will of the Lord be done."

2. The church needs God given vision. Prophetic ministries help provide and define vision, and release ministry anointing to fulfill vision.

Proverbs 29:18 (NRSV)
18 Where there is no prophecy, the people cast off restraint, but happy are those who keep the law.

3. The church is continually being challenged to return to the traditional perspectives of men, old customs and habits. Humanistic thinking, new age thinking, the spirit of control and manipulation are common problems facing ministry today. Prophetic ministry helps watch for things contrary to sound Biblical patterns, so as to enable and encourage believers to stay true to the Lord and His ways. This helps the church stay alive to what the Lord is doing today. Prophetic ministry helps weed out spiritual influences that undermine and pervert faith, and provides balance and perspectives needed to walk in the midst of false ideas.

4. The church will continue to be under pressure to conform to being average, ineffectual, and cultural (rather than spiritual). It will experience continual pressure to live within the limits of comfort zones and unbelief. Prophetic ministry will help continue to encourage and inspire the church to excellence, powerful influence, being spiritually alive, expansive and progressive.

5. Prophetic ministry will help release new strength and ability, revealing new ways of doing things to get the job done, when the church becomes weary with the burden of caring of the multitudes of needs and problems.

6. The church, under the inspiration of prophetic teaching, preaching and through prophecy, will become a people who both know and walk out their God given destiny. A new sense of purpose, direction and understanding of destiny will be imparted, enabling the church to get into the next stage or dimension of ministry in an on going manner.

7. When difficulties, hardships, trials and tribulations come, the Lord will use prophetic ministry to refresh and renew His people, releasing courage, faith and perspectives that will give solutions to problems.

8. Through prophetic ministry believers will wage a good spiritual warfare and be victorious in all things.

9. With the help of prophetic ministry, God will give the blueprints to the building and joining of His church together in unity of the Spirit and fulfilling of His purpose.
