What to wear? What to wear!

Summer is coming slowly to Whidbey Island.  I've heard
about the extreme heat in the other parts of our country and even Seattle has
had its share of 80 degree temperatures.  Not so much where I live.
We live in what is known as a temperate zone, with winds cooling our
island almost every evening.  This loves- warm- weather person finds it
hard to shed my winter clothes.  I cautiously venture out in sandals and
maybe capris, but always with a jacket or sweatshirt on hand (to be honest, I'm
wearing them!).  I believe that someday soon, consistent summer weather
will arrive and I can actively plan on donning my summer gear without
trepidation of being cold!  I have hope for true summer heat, but can't do
it with gray days and cool breezes.  We are in that in between season,
where it is difficult to know what to put on.   However, God's Word
instructs ius in what  we should wear, no matter the season.  It is
always appropriate, always in style and looks good on every body shape!

There is something freeing about wearing cooler, lighter
clothing (modestly of course!).  The same is true for our spiritual
clothing!  Paul exhorts us both in Ephesians and in Colossians to put off
the old man.  The New Living translation says "since you have heard about
Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful
nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.
Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.  Put on
your new nature, created to be like God--truly righteous and holy.
(Ephesians 4: 21-24)  Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you
learn to know your Creator and become life him. (Colossians 3:10).
Colossians 3:8 says "But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage,
malicious behavior, slander and dirty language.  Don't lie to each other,
for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked
  I don't
know about you but that list doesn't seem very attractive!

Some people hate to wear new things.  They don't like the
attention that they might receive from the comments of others.  Others
love it!  I think I fall in the middle.  Colossians 3: 12 goes on to
gives us our new wardrobe choices!  Since God chose you to be the holy
people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience.  Make allowance for each other's faults
and forgive anyone who offends you.  Remember the Lord forgave you, so you
must forgive others.  Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds
us all together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace that comes from
Christ rule in your hearts.  For as members of one body you are called to
live in peace.  And, always be thankful.  (Colossians 3: 12-16)

It isn't always easy to put off our old nature.  The Holy
Spirit is there to help us.  We have the wonderful gift of God's Word
which as we follow the teachings bring life and correction.  Psalms 119:9
says How can a young person
stay pure? By obeying your word.
119:11 Hebrews 4:12 For
the word of God is alive and powerful.  It is sharper than the sharpest
two edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow.
It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
people get nervous about the above scriptures, concerned that they can't/won't
measure up to them.  This is a lie.  As we read further down that
chapter in Hebrews we discover these scriptures:  so then, since we
have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us
hold firmly to what we believe.  This High Priest of ours understands our
weaknesses, for hefaced all of the same testings we do, yet did not sin.
So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.  There we
will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

We begin to change our clothes by looking at those things we are
not supposed to wear.  As we acknowledge our areas of need, and ask for
help in putting them off, we will begin to change.  This is a choice.
Father, I choose to put off the old and put on the new, please help me in
this resolve.  I choose to dress according to your Word and by your grace
I will do it!  I choose to let the Holy Spirit be my stylist.  I
choose to allow the washing of your Word to cleanse me and I understand the
gift of your righteousness is mine to wear.  Thank you for grace and help
in my time of need during this learning process.  I trust you to help me
change my clothes.  In Jesus Name, amen.
